Grand sergeanty - an especially honorable tenure

In short, sergeanty means service. While lords paramount and mesne lords may have frequently granted lands to tenants by means of sergeanty - as compensation for serving as the manor's steward - grand sergeanty was something altogether different. 

At its core, grand sergeanty was a form of military tenure held of, and especially close to, The Crown. Whereas petty sergeanty related to a multitude of diverse tasks which could be done anywhere, grand sergeanty referred to only those services performed directly to/for The Crown. While modern examples are almost exclusively restricted to the coronation, originally services ranged broadly.
